JOYFUL RESTRAINT
Large Scale Drawings
by Cein Watson
Cein Watson was born in El Paso, Texas, 1982 and currently lives and works in the woods of Vermont. He received his BFA in printmaking,
a BA in Art History, and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Utah (2008). He is presently building a cabin by hand in the mountains of Southern Vermont.
He considers the work to be a thought experiment. It is not a narrative and it is not an argument. It is something in between.
The rules of the art making process (syntax) determine the formal elements of the work (semantics). The syntax is designed around a
given theory. The rules of the syntax are governed by their need to illustrate, express, or embody the prescribed theory or theories.
The last few years his work has focus particularly on agency and determinism in the history of philosophy.
The drawings for the show “Joyful Restraint” are part of an ongoing series made for a future book.
